Passage-time coding with a timing kernel inferred from irregular cortical spike sequences

چکیده
In vivo cortical neurons exhibit highly irregular spike sequences. However, the computational implications of this irregular firing with respect to neural codings are not yet fully understood. Recently, we formulated neuronal firing as a stochastic process to translate the firing rate determined by synaptic input into an irregular sequence of inter-spike intervals (ISIs). We previously determined that steady-state distributions of ISIs obey a power-law in the majority of neurons recorded from the sensorimotor cortex of a rat performing a forelimb-movement task. This observation led us to a hypothesis for a neural code with irregular spiking, which we termed as ‘constrained maximization of firing-rate entropy’ (CMFE). This hypothesis asserts that noisy neuronal activity maximizes steady-state firing-rate entropy under the joint constraints of energy consumption and uncertainty over output spike trains. CMFE previously assumed that the values of the rate parameters in two successive ISIs are random and uncorrelated with each other. However, this is an oversimplification and is unrealistic. In addition, the CMFE hypothesis seems to contradict our perception that the firing-rate distribution is dependent on external stimuli. Therefore, it is necessary to explore a rate-coding scheme that can resolve these issues. In this study, we review the concept of CMFE and extend it to incorporate the correlated nature of a firing rate sequence in a biological nervous system. Balanced excitatory and inhibitory inputs to cortical neurons decouple firing irregularity from rate modulations.
In vivo cortical neurons are known to exhibit highly irregular spike patterns. Because the intervals between successive spikes fluctuate greatly, irregular neuronal firing makes it difficult to estimate instantaneous firing rates accurately. If, however, the irregularity of spike timing is decoupled from rate modulations, the estimate of firing rate can be improved. Here, we introduce a novel c...

In the cortex, the timing of successive action potentials is highly irregular. The interpretation of this irregularity has led to two divergent views of cortical organization. On the one hand, the irregularity might arise from stochastic forces. If so, the irregular interspike interval reflects a random process and implies that an instantaneous estimate of the spike rate can be obtained by aver...

متن کاملNeural populations can induce reliable postsynaptic currents without observable spike rate changes or precise spike timing.
Fine temporal patterns of firing in much of the brain are highly irregular. In some circuits, the precise pattern of irregularity contains information beyond that contained in mean firing rates. However, the capacity of neural circuits to use this additional information for computational purposes is not well understood. Here we employ computational methods to show that an ensemble of neurons fi...
متن کاملReliability of spike timing in neocortical neurons.
It is not known whether the variability of neural activity in the cerebral cortex carries information or reflects noisy underlying mechanisms. In an examination of the reliability of spike generation using recordings from neurons in rat neocortical slices, the precision of spike timing was found to depend on stimulus transients. Constant stimuli led to imprecise spike trains, whereas stimuli wi...
